How to Calculate a Discount

Every discount question is one of three, and each has a one-line formula:

Sale price

Sale price = price x (1 - percent / 100). 30% off $40 is 40 x 0.70 = $28, a saving of $12.

Percent off

Percent off = (original - sale) / original x 100. From $80 down to $52 is 28 / 80 = 35% off.

Original price

Original = sale price / (1 - percent / 100). $45 after 25% off was 45 / 0.75 = $60.

A shortcut for doing it in your head: 10% is the price with the decimal point moved one place left. 10% of $64 is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80 and 30% is $19.20. Half of 10% is 5%, which gets you 15% and 25% too.

Stacked Discounts: "Extra % Off" Is Less Than It Looks

When a store takes an extra percentage off an already reduced price, the discounts multiply rather than add. On a $100 item:

DealSounds likeReal discountYou pay on $100
20% off + extra 10% off30%28%$72.00
25% off + extra 15% off40%36.25%$63.75

60% off + extra 30% off90%72%$28.00
70% off + extra 10% off80%73%$27.00

50% off plus an extra 50% off is 75% off, not free. The order of the two discounts never changes the result.

Sales Tax After a Discount

Add tax to the price you actually pay. With a store discount, US states generally tax the reduced price: 25% off $80 is $60, and 8.25% tax on $60 makes $64.95. Manufacturer coupons are often taxed on the price before the coupon, so the receipt can come out slightly higher than the calculator. If you do not know your rate, our sales tax calculator lists the rate for every state.

Is It Really a Deal?

A percentage is only as honest as the price it starts from. "Was" and "list" prices are sometimes set high so the discount looks bigger, so compare the sale price with what the item has actually sold for over the past few weeks. For big seasonal sales such as Black Friday, check the price a week or two before the sale too: a 40% discount on a price that went up last month may be a 10% discount in reality.

Как мы это считаем

Метод
Sale price = price x (1 - percent off); stacked discounts multiply; tax on the discounted price
Формула
Sale price = P x (1 - d/100). Second discount: P x (1 - d1/100) x (1 - d2/100); real combined discount = 1 - (1 - d1/100)(1 - d2/100). Percent off = (original - sale) / original x 100. Original price = sale / (1 - d/100). With tax = price after discounts x (1 + t/100). Rounded to the cent only for display.
Источник
Standard percentage arithmetic. Sales tax on the discounted price for store discounts follows general US state practice (see e.g. state department of revenue guidance on retailer coupons vs manufacturer coupons).
Ограничения
Stores may round each step to the cent, so a receipt can differ by a cent. Manufacturer coupons are taxed on the pre-coupon price in many states; this calculator applies tax after all discounts. It does not know an item's real price history: a percentage off an inflated "was" price is not a real saving.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Multiply the price by the percent off and divide by 100 to get the savings, then subtract it from the price. 25% off $80 is 80 x 25 / 100 = $20 off, so you pay $60. A quicker way: multiply by what you keep. 25% off means you pay 75%, and 80 x 0.75 = $60.

No, it is 28% off. The extra 10% comes off the already reduced price, not the original. On $100, 20% off leaves $80, and 10% off $80 is $8, so you pay $72. Stacked discounts multiply: you keep 0.80 x 0.90 = 0.72 of the price. The order does not matter, but the total is always less than the two percentages added together.

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. A jacket marked down from $80 to $52 is (80 - 52) / 80 x 100 = 35% off. Use the "percent off" mode of the calculator for this.

Divide the sale price by the share you paid. If $45 is the price after 25% off, you paid 75% of the original, so the original was 45 / 0.75 = $60. Subtracting 25% of $45 gives the wrong answer ($33.75) because the discount was taken from the original price, not the sale price.

For a store discount or store coupon, US states generally charge sales tax on the reduced price, which is how this calculator works. Manufacturer coupons are different: many states tax the price before the manufacturer coupon, because the store is reimbursed for it. Check your state's rules if the difference matters.

Compare the sale price with what the item actually sold for over the past few weeks, not with the "list" or "was" price, which can be set high so the discount looks bigger. On Amazon, a price-history tracker or the "Typical price" note under the price shows what it has usually cost.
